Hove Library Feature Lighting

Horsell Electrics Limited – Bespoke Lighting Solutions.
We produce an extensive range of standard lighting equipment, but we realise that customers requirements are wide ranging and are not limited to the items that we show in our catalogue, or on our website. This is where our bespoke lighting service comes into its own. Whether it is one luminaire, or a whole floor of lighting, we have a proven track record of producing ‘specials’.
Some typical non standard requirements:
* Imperial size units.
* Special depth fittings for restricted ceiling voids.
* Non standard Colours.
* Rear Access Units.
Case Study. - Hove Library, Church Road, Hove, East Sussex.
Background
Opened in 1908, Hove Library has been an important landmark and resource for local people. In 2005 it was closed for major improvements which involved work to many areas of the building, including the lighting. The interior of the building was refurbished and re painted, particular attention was paid to period architectural features of the interior including coving and ceiling decoration.
The Project
Horsell Electrics were called in by local contractors, AJ Taylor to provide a bespoke lighting scheme for the interior of the Library. The requirement was a suspended continuous lighting system that could give some measure of uplighting, to highlight the ceilings as well as a category 2 requirement for VDT screens. The ceilings were extremely high, and the luminaries had to be suspended on wires. The scheme needed balanced, uniform illumination throughout. There were six areas that required lighting including a children’s area.
The Lighting
We based the lighting system around the popular T5 DSW range using the twin 1500mm 49W high output option supplied with a polished aluminium category 2 louvre. We produced special infil sections and corner pieces with through wiring to complement the contoured body. Each section could be bolted together easily. The number of luminaries varied depending on the area involved – the largest assembly contained 10 twin 49W units and the smallest had 4.
The assemblies were suspended on 1M long adjustable cables.
The Result
We succeeded in our aim to provide a contemporary solution that contrasted well with the period features of the interior of the Library without being too intrusive.
